Chiming in: Rihanna's ex Chris Brown took to social media to wish her a happy birthday
Brown - who, for a time, would rekindle his romance with the songstress in 2012 -complained in 2014 that he believed a segment of the public would never let him live down the ugly incident (TMZ released pictures of Rihanna showing the physical damage she suffered in the attack).
'As long as you’re doing something good, people will always bring up old stuff or negative stuff because they don’t want you to surpass a certain level or elevate,' he told Billboard. 'But as long as you have your head on straight, it shouldn’t matter what people want to say.'
The You Da One singer explained to Vanity Fair in 2015 the mindset she had when she got back together with Brown for a time.
'I was that girl,' she said. 'That girl who felt that as much pain as this relationship is, maybe some people are built stronger than others. Maybe I’m one of those people built to handle s*** like this.
'Maybe I’m the person who’s almost the guardian angel to this person, to be there when they’re not strong enough, when they’re not understanding the world, when they just need someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing.'
Mixed reaction: Public feedback was all over the place over Brown's birthday message
