Southampton vs Chelsea: Premier League preview
Southampton host Chelsea at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. Both sides begin the weekend in poor form.
Chelsea appear to be on the verge of sacking Antonio Conte after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham in last weekend’s London derby. Cesar Azpilicueta opened the scoring for the Blues before Javier Hernandez leveled things up for the Hammers in the second half.
Chelsea have lost three away Premier League matches on the spin and their chances of finishing inside the top four are fading quickly.
Southampton face even greater problems as they begin the weekend inside the relegation zone, three points from safety.
There were, however, promising signs for Saints last weekend, who suffered a narrow 3-2 away defeat at Arsenal. Shane Long and Charlie Austin scored for Southampton, who finished the match with 10 men.
Southampton have the second-worst home record in the league this season, winning only 3 of their 16 matches.
Marcos Alonso scored the only goal of the game when the sides met in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge in December.
The two sides will face each other again in two week’s time for their FA Cup semi-final clash at Wembley.
