Enough is enough: It’s time for this English World Cup star to leave Chelsea and achieve greatness

According to a report by The Guardian, Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has admitted that he wants to play regular first-team football. This does raise questions regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.

Over the years, Stamford Bridge has not been the ideal destination for young players and a similar situation is brewing for Loftus-Cheek as well. He spent last season on loan with Crystal Palace but now that he is back, it remains to be seen if an exit is on the cards.

Currently with Gareth Southgate’s England squad in Russia for the ongoing World Cup, Loftus-Cheek will have an important decision to make. Since making his senior debut back in 2014, the 22-year-old has only made 6 starts for the club so far.

It is a worrisome prospect for a player of his calibre to start a handful of times in a period of 4 years, thus making it clear that he must leave Chelsea this summer. Exiting the club would not benefit him in a great manner and it will also provide him with a brilliant chance of reviving his career.

He saw last season as to what regular game time can do to him. Having started 21 times for the Eagles, Loftus-Cheek was included in the World Cup squad for England. The Three Lions have a good team this time and the fact that Southgate chose him to be a part of the 23-man squad is truly impressive.

Although he still has 3 years left on his contract with Chelsea, this might be a golden opportunity for him to leave the club – even more so if he performs well in Russia.

The mega event is usually a hunting ground for clubs looking to sign new players and young players like Loftus-Cheek are always in demand. If he is able to impress with his displays for England, he might have a good number of clubs lining up for his signature.

It is evident that he is abundantly talented and at the right club, he could go on to achieve great things. If Chelsea are willing to offer him frequent first-team opportunities, it might not be a bad idea for him to stay back.

However, the Londoners have quite a lot of midfielders at their disposal right now. It would be a big step for Loftus-Cheek to replace one of them in the first-team but in the current scenario, it seems like wishful thinking.

For someone of his age, the only way to develop and progress further is by playing regularly. Hence, he must prioritise that ahead of everything else and join whichever club that offers him the chance to cement his spot in their first-team.
